About the Coalition

Stronger standards.
Closer cooperation.

A regional framework for the organizations entrusted with telling a community’s story.

Our purposeLocal knowledge.
Shared responsibility.

A common foundation
for local tourism.

Municipal tourism bodies serve a practical public purpose: helping people understand a place, discover its events, and plan their time there. That work depends on sound administration as much as it depends on effective promotion.

The Midwestern Tourism Board Coalition (MTBC) provides a shared structure for that work. Its governing framework addresses how members participate, how decisions are made, and how local tourism information is maintained. The aim is straightforward: consistent expectations that support dependable service to communities, organizers, and visitors.

Regional in scope.
Local in responsibility.

The Coalition’s geographic scope covers Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Eligible organizations include municipal tourism boards, convention and visitors bureaus, and other bodies formally responsible for local visitor information.

Participation rests on a defined commitment to common standards. Each member jurisdiction has one vote, with procedures designed to keep representation clear and decisions accountable. Local organizations retain responsibility for their own operations and the distinct needs of the communities they serve.

Local character is best supported by information people can rely on.

From principle to practice.

The Coalition’s work is organized around three connected responsibilities: clear governance, reliable public information, and practical cooperation. Standing committees review proposed standards, invite member comment, and recommend changes through the procedures set out in the bylaws.

Event publication is an important part of this framework. The bylaws establish consistent listing requirements, minimum information standards, and a review process for organizers. These provisions help make local events discoverable through the visitor-information channels intended to serve them.

An accountable structure.

The Assembly is the Coalition’s voting body. The Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer administer its work through the Executive Committee. Membership, standards development, financial oversight, and administrative review are governed by the same published instrument.

The authoritative provisions, including eligibility, voting rights, meeting procedure, and the amendment process, are available in the governing bylaws.
